Charterhouse Port-Sainte-Marie
The site is open to visitors.
The Charterhouse Port-Sainte-Marie was founded in 1219, a major archaeological site for the history of the Carthusians, that has radiated and marked history over more than 5 centuries. Its preservation makes it possible to discover the organization of a charterhouse and its protected setting.
The Carthusian monastery spread and marked economic and cultural history throughout the Combrailles and as far as Limagne for more than 5 centuries. Abandoned during the Revolution, its possessions were scattered in particular in the neighbouring churches (Manzat, Pontgibaud). Today, the remains of the monument, which have been enhanced by the association of the Friends of the Charterhouse, allow us to understand the architectural organisation of a Charterhouse. The site, whose medieval layers remain untouched, has an archaeological potential of prime importance. Every year, plastic installations created by children from the Combrailles schools in association with an artist offer an artistic tour of the site.
